Three Questions Every Supervisor Should Answer Before Work Starts

A supervisor does not need a longer report to improve control. They need the right questions before the crew commits to the work.

THE FIRE

Many shifts begin with assumptions: the access will be ready, the material will arrive and the available team will match the plan. When one assumption fails, the crew discovers it after mobilisation.

THE BLUEPRINT

1. What are the three outputs that must be completed today?
2. What condition could stop each output before the shift closes?
3. Who owns the decision if that condition appears?

Record the answers in a short control sheet. Use the same structure at shift start, during the work window and at close-out.

THE METRIC

Track readiness exceptions found before mobilisation, actions with named owners and repeat blockers. The purpose is not to prove that the supervisor filled in a form. It is to move the decision earlier.

This is an operational framework, not legal, engineering, safety or financial advice.

Put this into practice

Use the supervisor's first planning review to rank outputs and name the prerequisite owner for each.

Give each priority an observable acceptance condition; a broad activity such as continue installation is insufficient.

Begin with one example using Priority rank, Output, Acceptance evidence, Capacity needed, Dependency. Give the record a stable identifier and connect any unresolved issue to an owner and next action. Ask the receiving reviewer to explain the decision the record supports before expanding the process.
