The 10-Minute Shift Start: A Better Alternative to the Morning Status Meeting

A morning status meeting can consume the most valuable part of the shift while still failing to answer the only question that matters: what must happen next?

THE FIRE

When a team spends the first hour describing yesterday’s problems, the work window has already started without a shared control point. Delayed materials, missing access, short crews and vehicle constraints then surface one at a time, usually after they have become expensive.

THE BLUEPRINT

1. Start with the three priority outputs for the next eight hours. State what must be completed, not everything that might happen.

2. Check readiness in four categories: labour, materials, access and equipment. Any missing condition becomes a named blocker with an owner and decision time.

3. Close with the escalation route. Everyone should know which exception can be solved at the workfront and which one must move to a project or client decision-maker.

THE METRIC

Measure meeting duration, attendance, blockers identified before mobilisation, actions with owners and repeat blockers. A shorter meeting is useful only when decisions arrive earlier and the shift starts with fewer unknowns.

PRACTICAL FIELD TEST

Trial a ten-minute shift-start control for five days. Move detailed problem-solving into focused follow-ups with only the people needed. Compare the number of early decisions and unresolved end-of-shift exceptions.

Put this into practice

Let the responsible supervisor confirm prerequisites with their actual owners before committing work to the shift.

An unknown access or equipment status stays unconfirmed; a checked labour field does not release the whole task.

Begin with one example using Shift, Priority output, Labour ready, Access ready, Materials ready. Give the record a stable identifier and connect any unresolved issue to an owner and next action. Ask the receiving reviewer to explain the decision the record supports before expanding the process.
