A Simple Fleet Readiness Check Before Vehicles Leave the Yard

A pre-departure check should confirm that the movement can be completed safely and as planned.

THE FIRE

Vehicles leave with the wrong load, incomplete instructions, unavailable equipment or unresolved defects, creating delays that are discovered on the road.

THE BLUEPRINT

1. Confirm vehicle, driver, load, route, access and delivery contact.
2. Verify required checks and records are current.
3. Record release status and escalate anything that prevents a safe or reliable departure.

THE METRIC

Track prevented departures, repeat defects, waiting time and delivery exceptions. Apply the relevant legal and company requirements.

Put this into practice

Ask the responsible asset reviewer to assess a reported defect and assign the appropriate response.

Do not treat the initial report as a verified diagnosis or mark closure without the reviewer's required evidence.

Begin with one example using Asset ID, Reported defect, Reported by role, Review decision, Action. Give the record a stable identifier and connect any unresolved issue to an owner and next action. Ask the receiving reviewer to explain the decision the record supports before expanding the process.

Open the Reported defects template and its review guidance.
