Plan Attainment: The KPI That Shows Whether the Plan Was Realistic

A missed plan needs more than an explanation. Plan attainment shows how much committed work was actually completed and where the variance came from.

THE FIRE

A team can appear productive while repeatedly carrying unfinished work forward. Without a consistent planned-versus-completed record, leaders cannot distinguish poor readiness from poor execution.

THE BLUEPRINT

1. Define the planned output in measurable terms.
2. Record the verified completed output at close-out.
3. Classify the variance by readiness, capacity, external constraint or execution issue.

THE METRIC

Use completed planned outputs divided by committed outputs, then review the reason codes behind misses. Avoid treating one percentage as a complete diagnosis.

Put this into practice

Review this with the output owner at a fixed reporting cutoff, using the frozen plan and accepted actuals.

Compare the same unit, scope and period; record incomplete work separately from verified completed quantities.

Begin with one example using Output, Unit, Planned quantity, Actual quantity, Variance. Give the record a stable identifier and connect any unresolved issue to an owner and next action. Ask the receiving reviewer to explain the decision the record supports before expanding the process.
