Change Roles Without Inventing a New Person

A new role brings different responsibilities, but it does not require a fabricated story about who you have always been. Begin with the skills and experience you can honestly describe.

Identify which parts transfer and which need learning. A person experienced in maintaining records may bring useful discipline to a new coordination role while still needing guidance on its technical decisions.

Make a credible contribution

In a fictional transition, offer to improve one defined handover process under the appropriate supervision. Show the work, ask for relevant feedback and make the limits of your authority clear. This creates evidence more useful than a dramatic title change alone.

Keep existing responsibilities visible while taking on the new work. If capacity or expectations conflict, discuss the trade rather than assuming the transition creates extra time.

Review progress through actual tasks completed and judgement improved. Your description of the role can develop as that evidence grows. A credible transition allows continuity: you bring what you know, acknowledge what you do not yet know and earn wider responsibility through work another person can assess.
